The Foot Washing

He gave me just two words, yet those two words…WOW!  Let me share with you a very special encounter I had with Jesus.

It was a Monday morning and I was with my then seven-year-old granddaughter.  She was spending the day with us.  I had just painted her nails hot pink and bright blue (every other finger), her choice, not mine.  While blowing on her nails she said, “Grandma, I want to do your feet.”

At first I laughed and protested “You don’t want to touch grandma’s stinky feet!” It did not stop her.  She continued to ask and I continued to object.  Then she came to me with a square plastic foot pan that she found in the back of the linen closet.

“Come on, Grandma”, she begged.  She was determined!  So, because of the look in her eyes, I relented.  It seemed so important to her.

I sat down on the lid of the toilet and she, in total delight, went to work.  She filled the pan with warm water then grabbed the fragrant bubble bath from the side of the tub.   From the cabinet she pulled out a towel and washcloth and ask, “Where is your lotion?”  She was planning on giving me the deluxe treatment!

She knelt before me and gently lifted one foot at a time into the warm sudsy water.  I sat looking down at her kneeling there holding my foot and wiping it with the wash cloth.  I was overcome by the tenderness of this foot washing and brought to tears.

I looked up to Jesus with spiritual eyes and I asked, “Lord, what is in this little girl’s heart that would make her want to do this?”  His answer was immediate, simple and clear.  He whispered, “It’s Me.”

When she finished her task, I gave her a big hug, hugging Jesus at the same time.  I will never forget this experience.  It is a memory that I will treasure in my heart forever.

I invite you to re-visit one of your treasured memories when you were blessed unexpectedly and suddenly realized in your heart, “It’s Jesus!”

  1. Oh my goodness, Marcy. I was brought to tears by this encounter. I still have goosebumps. As they say, “Out of the mouths of the little children.” They are completely open to Jesus, and really hear him. We, on the other hand, are to closed off and suspicious to even consider Jesus might really be talking to us.
